Performance & Handling

The 2012 Chevrolet Suburban offers a healthy offering of customization with choices of both engine and drive train for almost every trim level. Consumers can choose between a Vortec 5.3-liter V8 engine with Active Fuel Management and E85 FlexFuel capability that produces 320 horsepower and 335 pound-feet of torque, or a larger Vortec 6.0-liter V8 engine with Variable Valve Timing that ups the vehicle's output to 352 horsepower and 382 pound-feet of torque. It's important to note, though, that the larger engine is not available on the premium LTZ trim. Both engines come paired with a Hydra-Matic six-speed automatic electronically-controlled transmission with overdrive and Tow/Haul mode, although the larger engine's transmission has been beefed up to handle the extra stress.

Engine choices bring other standard differences, including engine-specific suspensions-the LTZ features its own that's available on neither lower trim-and engine-specific transfer cases. In addition to engine choice, drivers can also select either rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive configurations for their vehicle.

Fuel economies vary for the 2012 Chevrolet Suburban based on engine and drivetrain choices, ranging from the smaller engine, two-wheel drive's 15 city/21 highway/17 combined mpg to the larger engine paired with a four-wheel drive configuration, which offers 10 city/15 highway/12 combined mpg.

Standard Features & Options

The 2012 Chevrolet Suburban offers three different trim levels to consumers. Each builds on its predecessor, and the lineup begins with the base LS trim. The LS features standard black assist steps, body-colored exterior trim, automatic headlamps and Daytime Running Lamps, a roof-mounted luggage rack, power and heated side-view mirrors, Bluetooth wireless technology for select phones, tri-zone manual climate control, analog instrumentation, remote keyless entry, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with mounted audio and cruise controls, power windows and locks, premium cloth seats, an AM/FM stereo with CD/MP3 player and a six-speaker sounds system, SiriusXM Radio with three trial months, a USB port, and 17-inch aluminum wheels.

The premium LTZ trim offers these additional changes: seven-passenger seating, perforated leather-appointed first- and second-row seats, front bucket seats with 12-way power adjusters, heated and cooled first-row seats and heated second-row seats with power release, a power-remote liftgate, 20-inch polished-aluminum wheels, a touch-screen navigation radio with rear vision camera display, SiriusXM NavTraffic with three trial months, a Bose Centerpoint surround sound 10-speaker system, a heated steering wheel, and Side Blind Zone Alert.

Separate options including a power sunroof or an entertainment system are available as add-ons, as well as package offerings including the Convenience Package available to the LS trim-adding a few key LT trim features-the LT-optional Luxury Package, and the Heavy-Duty Trailering Package.
